Jackson's Project

This project was created in a Visual and Communication Arts Photography II course at Eastern Mennonite University. The purpose of this project was to create a story through a series of photographs and illustrate a narrative.

the expedition

My dad grew up hearing stories of trips through Europe from a US soldier returned from World War II. His grandfather (my great grandfather) brought home pictures of him and his battalion in different French cities. My dad never really heard any stories of actual battles or gun fire, but he did gain a great interest in stories of war. This created an interest in small, green, wax, toy army men. He would set up his own battle or adventure in his front yard. Tree stumps were giant plateaus, dandelions were lanky trees, and a small puddle was an enormous lake.

Our childhood imagination is incredible, but as we grow older we lose the extent to which we can really imagine things as incredibly as we did as children. This project is designed to depict these same army men that my dad grew up playing with in a way that brings us back to the imagination we had before. These are humans on an adventure through thick woods, wide rivers, and dangerous caves.
