Artist Statement
As an athlete myself, when I look at sports photography, I find it is very cookie-cutter. It always captures what's happening in the moment but never what could happen. After seeing things closely and face to face for years, I stepped behind the camera at EMU. Sports aren't as beautiful as pictures make them out to be. They're rough, rugged, and scrappy. Those are the themes I have wanted to capture while photographing sports.
Running, jumping, and moving can do exciting things to faces. Gravity pulls down your face while jumping as you begin to be pulled down back to earth. Throwing a ball causes people to puff out their cheeks and make faces as they release it. Athletes frozen in motion are different in their own ways. It may not always be beautiful to everyone, but movement, frozen in time, is captivating in its own way. That is what makes sports so interesting.
