This photo-manipulation series explores the symbolism of an apple in and literature using both traditional art and photographs to create a surreal retelling of well-known stories. The pictures are meant to provoke a feeling of a dark, surreal fairytale and show how influential the apple has been on our culture from the very first story of Adam and Eve.
The use of hand-drawn figures represent the generic characters that are involved in each story – simple and plain so that they might be inserted into any situation – whether their origins were German, Greek, or American. I also wanted to show them looking as though they’ve leaped right off of the pages and coming to life in their settings.
