Foundations of Design
Artist's Statement
This series is all about simplicity. Each of these images was created around a basic element of design (line, shape, color, repetition, etc.). A variety of mediums were used to create these pieces including watercolor, construction papers, ink, pen, and pencil. The idea was that all of the materials used to create these pieces were common and simple; things you might find around your house. This project helped me to strip down my art projects to the bare minimum, and focus on the building blocks of design and composition instead of my materials. What I learned through this project is that a simple design is sometimes harder to create than a complex one. Overall I think the series has solidified for me a strong foundation in the basic elements of design. This fundemental understanding of the elements has helped me to understand photography and complex studio art at a higher level, and has trained my eye to be better at recognizing, creating, and composing works of art.
