About Allie

I am currently a junior at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU). I am Communications major with a minor in both Writing Studies and Journalism. Writing is my passion. Throughout my college journey, I have had articles and poems published in the Weather Vane, EMU’s student lead newspaper, as well as poems published in the Phoenix, EMU’s Literary and Visual Arts Journal. In addition, I have served as the Opinion Editor for the Weather Vane. I have worked with programs such as Indesign, Lightroom, and Photoshop. Poetry Writing class taught me the importance of metaphors and imagery. News and Feature Writing taught me the significance of simplicity. Global Literature opened my eyes to many different writing styles. American Ethnic Writers taught me about minority groups in America. This class inspired me to highlight minority issues in my writing.

I was raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia where I have lived my entire life. It wasn't until my junior year of high school that I realized my love for writing and reading. That year I was required to read eight books for one of my classes. Since my teacher allowed us to read whatever books we wanted, my initial dread of this task soon faded and transformed into an unexpected and encouraging discovery. I enjoyed reading. After that year I began to realize how easy writing came to me compare to other students. This self discovery influenced my choice in a major and minors for college.

Why Writing?

Writing is an art that allows you to reach many different people and audiences. Through writing you can express yourself as creative or direct as you please. I enjoy writing for these reasons. I find the most inspiration from reading bodies of work that implement creative imagery and metaphors. Creative writing is a passion of mine that gives me the most satisfaction. As I write, I learn more about myself and I use it as an outlet to teach others and highlight issues in the world today. My greatest desire for my writing is to provoke thought in my audience in a new and intriguing way.
